The GLF AT WORK

The GLF makes representation on behalf of Forums to the Greater London Authority, the Association of London Government and other relevant bodies on London-wide issues such as health and education. GLF members were crucial in promoting the needs of older people and disabled people in the extension of concessionary fares to overland railway services.

Gathers information across London on various matters, such as public services, recreational activities and health & social care.

Publishes and widely circulates a quarterly information bulletin, ‘Senior London’.

Undertakes training on subjects such as: how to run Forums, fund-raising, dealing with the media, skills to increase participation by excluded groups.

LOCAL BOROUGH FORUMS

A Borough Forum is an umbrella body composed of representatives of older people’s organisations and other bodies working with or for older people in that borough. A Forum’s main concern is representing their own views to their local authority, MPs, MEPs and other statutory/voluntary bodies.

A Forum gives older people an ‘active voice’ in stating their needs and wishes on local services and the decision making process. Forums are non-party political. They deal with local issues such as community care, the siting of a bus stop, removal of household waste, educational and leisure provision for older people.

Forums have their own Executive or Management Committees to make policies and plan events. Issues are taken to the quarterly GLF council meeting where London-wide matters are discussed. Forums feed views and concerns into these discussions and benefit from the perspectives of colleagues from other parts of London.

HOW TO BE INVOLVED

If you wish to contact a Borough Forum either for help or to contribute to their work, please get in touch with the Director or the Forum Development Officer at the GLF, and we will give you a name and contact.

Volunteers are needed and welcomed in the GLF office, to help with mailing, research etc. Please tell us what your interests are and the time you have available.

The GLF is funded through grants and donations, and needs and welcomes donations and legacies.  For information on regular donations, deeds of covenant and legacies write to us at above address..
