Notice of Meeting of Scottish Pensioners’ organisations
11-3pm
Monday, 24th March 2003, Transport House, Glasgow.
You may be aware that I was asked to help to progress matters towards
achieving unity within Scottish pensioners groups. I am now pleased to
invite your organisation to send representative(s) to the meeting as
outlined above. We will continue the dialogue, which was started at the
exploratory meeting of 19th February.
Since that meeting, I have been inundated with pledges of enthusiastic
support with some suggested issues for discussion. Various names have
been mentioned and the two most popular to date appears to be ‘Scottish
Pensioners Parliament’ and ‘Scottish Pensioners Convention’. It has
also been said that a Parliament on the same lines as the Irish Seniors
Citizens Parliament could be the best option?
(Note:
The
ISCP
has as part of its membership criteria
“All affiliated organisations retain their autonomy and have an equal
status, having the right to nominate 3 delegates to the Parliament,
regardless of the size of the organisation”)
The desire to have “one voice” representing Scottish Pensioners, on ALL
issues, has been growing steadily over the past few years. In order to
improve the quality of life for Scottish Seniors we need to present our
case to both the Scottish and Westminster Parliaments as a united
group. To do otherwise is to advertise the fact that we are NOT united
and can only continue to result in failure. Our goal is to have a strong
voice - with teeth.
The
views of your organisation on how best to progress this matter are
essential.
Could you please let me know who will be attending on behalf of your
organisation ASAP?
I
look forward to meeting you there.
Yours sincerely
George Henderson
