West of Scotland Seniors Forum

West of Scotland Seniors Forum (formerly Strathclyde Elderly Forum) is a registered charity and was formed in 1985 to act as the umbrella body for local senior forums in the West of Scotland. We have a network of over 80 local seniors forums located throughout the 12 local authority areas that make up the West of Scotland area.

From its office base in Glasgow, West of Scotland Seniors Forum (WSSF) provides advice, training, information and support for new and established local senior forums.

WSSF works to raise awareness of issues affecting older people and ensures that decision-makers and service providers are informed about older peoples’ needs and views on services and other matters affecting them.

WSSF acts as a consultative body, giving statutory agencies (e.g. Health Boards or Social Work Departments) older peoples’ views on current and proposed service provision.

WSSF has joined together with other Scottish grassroots Older Peoples groups and organised meetings with Scottish Executive Ministers to put across the older persons viewpoint.

WSSF works closely with our members to ensure that our advice, training, information and support reflect and address the issues that matter to them.

WSSF works with other community organisations and agencies including the Scottish Executive, Local Authorities, Health Boards and Social Work Departments to identify, highlight and address the issues of concern to older people.

WSSF is one of the UK’s foremost grassroots pensioners’ representative groups and has assisted in setting up senior forums in other parts of the country.

WSSF is an independent grassroots representative organisation and is run by older people for older people.

Our Aims:

West of Scotland Seniors Forum seeks to advance the education, relieve the needs and promote the health and welfare of older people. WSSF is committed to promoting the interests of all older people and ensuring that every older person has the secure, dignified, respectful and independent retirement they deserve.

Local Senior Forums

Local Senior Forums come together as West of Scotland Seniors Forum to campaign on national issues. There are currently 85 local seniors forums throughout the 12 local authority areas which make up the former Strathclyde Region.

Local Senior Forums are very different to many other older peoples organisations in that they are advocacy groups, not social clubs.

Local Senior Forums advocate for better rights services and facilities for local older people. They tackle many issues such as, transport, road crossings, conditions of roads and pavements, street lighting and services provided by local social work departments.

Local Senior Forums are made up of individuals and representatives from each of the older peoples groups in their area. In this way the forum can identify what problems older people are facing.

Local Senior Forums exist to represent the views and interests of all older people in their local area.

Local Senior Forums meet once a month at our Assembly Meetings in Glasgow.
